Amit Shah to Campaign in Manipur Amid Pre-Election Tensions

top-news

Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to embark on a campaign trail for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Manipur, a state grappling with recent violence, as part of the buildup to Lok Sabha Elections 2024. Shah’s itinerary includes addressing a public rally in Tripura before heading to Manipur for crucial meetings and campaign events.

Arriving in Agartala, Tripura on Sunday, Shah’s visit signifies the BJP’s concerted efforts to strengthen its presence and garner support in the region. His first engagement will be an election rally in Tripura’s Kumarghat, where he will lend his voice in support of the BJP candidate for the Tripura East Lok Sabha seat, Kriti Devi Debbarman.

Accompanying Shah at the Tripura rally will be notable figures such as Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, Tipra Motha chief Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma, and BJP nominee Kriti Devi Debbarman. This collective presence underscores the significance of the event and the BJP’s campaign strategy in the region.

Following the Tripura rally, Shah’s focus will shift to Manipur, where he will engage in crucial discussions with Chief Minister N Biren Singh, Manipur BJP president A Sharda Devi, and other party leaders in Imphal. The Union Home Minister’s presence is expected to energize the BJP’s campaign efforts in Manipur, particularly for Thounaojam Basanta Kumar Singh, the BJP candidate contesting from the Inner Manipur constituency.

Singh, also serving as the Education Minister in the Manipur government, is vying for the seat currently held by BJP leader and Union Minister of State for External Affairs, Rajkumar Ranjan Singh. Notably, the BJP has chosen not to field a candidate from the Outer Manipur constituency, opting instead to support candidates backed by its ally, the Naga People’s Front, within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

The BJP’s campaign in Manipur comes against a backdrop of recent ethnic tensions and violence in the state, underlining the critical nature of Shah’s visit and the party’s efforts to navigate and address these complex dynamics in the run-up to the Lok Sabha Elections 2024.
